Go to Settings → Document naming, build the file name from merge fields, then click Save naming. The page is described as "Build the default file name from merge fields".
If your generated files are landing in a folder in no useful order, this is the page that fixes it.
Applies to: general contractor accounts (any role)
Steps
Click your name at the bottom of the left sidebar, then click Settings.
Under TEMPLATES, click Document naming.
Under START FROM A TEMPLATE, click a starting point: Project · Scope · Vendor, Project · Vendor, or Project · Date. This fills the File name prefix so you are adjusting a pattern rather than building one from nothing.
Add fields. As the page says: "Search the field library and click to add; click a spot in the name to insert there, drag chips to reorder, and click ✕ to remove. The document's name always comes last." Use Insert here to drop a field at the spot you clicked, or Insert at end to add it to the end.
Reorder by dragging the chips. Remove a field with the ✕ on its chip, or use Remove field and Remove text.
Set the characters that sit between fields in the Separator text box.
Read the Preview: line. It shows the pattern applied to a sample file name, so you can see the result before you commit to it.
Click Save naming.
What happens next
Documents generated from then on use the prefix you built. The document's own name is always added at the end, so the file stays identifiable no matter how much you put in front of it. That rule is not optional and you cannot move the document name earlier in the pattern.
Reset returns the naming to its previous state. Use it if you have made a mess of a pattern and want to abandon the changes rather than unpick them chip by chip.
If this doesn't work
The Preview line does not look how you expected → check the Separator text box. The characters between fields come from there, not from the chips, and an empty separator runs the values together.
A field you want is not in the library → the field library is fed by your merge fields. Open Settings → Merge fields ("Default file naming, field management, export") and confirm the field exists there first.
You cannot see Document naming in Settings → this page is only available on general contractor accounts. If you are on a vendor account, your file naming is set by the general contractor who sends you documents.
You changed the pattern and nothing looks different → confirm you clicked Save naming. Leaving the page without saving discards the pattern.
