How do I preview the contract before I send it?

Written by Zach Koerber

You preview the contract right inside the commitment's draft builder, using the Form | Split | Doc toggle in the top toolbar. Switch to Split to see the fillable form and the live contract side by side, or Doc to read the full contract on its own, and the preview renders on the right.

Checking the contract before it leaves your hands is worth doing on every commitment, and the builder renders it live so nothing on the page is a surprise.

Preview the contract

  1. Open the commitment you want to check. From the Pipeline on your Dashboard, click View draft or Continue drafting on a Draft card. The Commitment Draft opens with a Draft badge next to the commitment's name in the top toolbar.

  2. Click Split in the top toolbar to see the form on the left and the live contract preview on the right. Click Doc for the full-width contract with no form, or Form to hide the preview and show the form only.

Required fields: the form tracks the fields you must fill before you can send. The note under Send for approval reads 2 merge fields left to fill and counts only the required fields you still have to fill. Click it and you jump straight to the first one. It only appears once a vendor, a package and an approval workflow are all in place, because those blockers are listed first. The completion ring beside it (19 / 38 above) counts every merge field on the package, required or not, so it can still be short of full when the button is already live. Any required field you have not filled yet renders in the preview as its field label (for example, Vendor Legal Name) inside a red dashed box with a faint red tint, so previewing shows you exactly which ones are still blank. Empty optional fields get a grey dashed box instead.

  1. Read the live preview on the right. Filled fields show their real values (for example, a Project location address of 16111 Plummer Street, North Hills, CA 91343); empty fields show their field label in a dashed box instead, red for a required field and grey for an optional one.

  2. Switch between the documents in the package. In Split view, use the dropdown that reads Standard subcontract · 1 of 5. In Doc view, click any document in the Contract Package list on the left instead.

  3. Use the Package and Internal tabs above the document list to choose what you are previewing. Package holds the documents the vendor receives; Internal holds documents you keep in-house.

  4. Zoom the preview with the stepper reading 100%, using the − and + buttons on either side to read the fine print.

  5. Click the download icon at the far right of the preview toolbar to save a copy of the document you are viewing.

What happens next

The preview reflects the current draft as you work, so filled fields show their values and blank required fields keep showing their labels in red dashed boxes until you complete them. Send for approval turns blue once four things are true: the project has an approval workflow set, a commitment package is selected, a vendor is selected, and no required fields are left. Hover the greyed-out button and the tooltip lists every gate that is still open, while the hint printed under the button shows only the first one, in that order. The completion ring counts every merge field on the package, so it does not have to be full for the button to go live. Sending puts the commitment through internal review rather than sending it to the vendor. While it sits in In Review, the approver opens the same draft, switches to Doc to read the full contract, then clicks Approve or Reject in the top toolbar. Those buttons appear only for the person whose approval is being requested, and a company admin also gets an override menu. Once approved, the state badge reads Approved and the primary button becomes Send Commitment Package.

If this doesn't work

  • If Send for approval is greyed out and shows 2 merge fields left to fill → open the form and fill every field still showing its label in a red dashed box in the preview; the button turns blue once none are left.

  • If the preview shows a field label in a dashed box instead of a real value → that field is still empty; type it into the matching field in the form on the left and the preview updates.

  • If the zoom stepper or the download icon reads "Loading…" to a screen reader → the control still works; use it as normal, the label is a known issue we are fixing.
