They are two different account types with different roles and permissions. A General Contractor account belongs to the company issuing the contract. A Vendor account belongs to the company receiving it. If your company already has a General Contractor account, you cannot use that same account to work as a subcontractor for someone else. You need a separate Vendor account for that work. [verify live: the one-account-per-role rule in these last two sentences is not in any crawl, including the 129-state deep pass on 2026-08-16, and not in any published help article. It came in as a support fact and could not be sourced. Support must confirm it before this article publishes, because it is the whole answer to the question.]
Applies to: Any company that both issues contracts to its own subs and takes work as a sub for another contractor, and anyone unsure which type of account they are signed in to.
Steps
Look at the left sidebar. A Vendor account shows exactly three items under WORKSPACE: Dashboard, Tasks, and Companies. If that is what you see, you are in a Vendor account.

Open Companies. In a Vendor account the first column is Prime, and the page lists the general contractors who send you work, along with Contact, Projects, Tasks, and Overdue. A Vendor account does not manage your own subcontractors.

Open a prime from Companies and click the Your Setup tab. The footer reads "These are the requirements this contractor needs from you." Requirements come to you in a Vendor account. A General Contractor account is built the other way around: its sidebar carries Dashboard and Inbox under WORKSPACE, Projects and Vendors under WORK, and Templates under LIBRARY, and requirements go out to vendors from there. [verify live: the General Contractor sidebar above was captured on the production build on 2026-07-09, not in either 2026-08-16 vendor crawl. No General Contractor surface appears anywhere in the 129-state deep crawl. Re-check the item names against the current General Contractor build before publishing.]
the Your Setup tab and its footer line
Click the Contacts & Info tab on the same profile. It lists COMPANY TYPE for that company, and for a prime it reads Prime. This is how the company record itself is labeled, alongside LEGAL NAME, DBA / TRADE NAME, EIN (TAX ID), PRIMARY TRADE, and WEBSITE. It tells you what the other company is. It does not tell you whether one company can hold both account types, which is the question at the top of this article.

Open any task and look at the parties on it. A Vendor account shows Your Contact and Your Signer under Your team, and Prime Coordinator and Prime Signer under Prime. Those prime roles sit in the General Contractor account, not yours. The two sides see the same document from different seats.

If your company needs to do both, reply to this article and support will set up the second account with you. [verify live: the sign-up path for a second account, whether the same email address can be reused across both, and the claim that a General Contractor account cannot receive vendor work, are all unsourced. No sign-up or account-creation screen was captured in any crawl, including the 129-state pass. Do not publish this step until support confirms them.]
What happens next
Each account stays in its own lane. Work you receive as a sub lands in the Vendor account and shows up under Tasks and on the vendor Dashboard. Work you issue to your own subs stays in the General Contractor account. [verify live: this whole section rests on the unsourced one-account-per-role rule above. Confirm with support before publishing.]
If this doesn't work
If a prime invited you and you cannot find the invite → check which account you are signed in to first. Look at the sidebar. Three items under WORKSPACE (Dashboard, Tasks, Companies) means you are in a Vendor account.
If you accepted an invite with an email already used on a General Contractor account → reply to this article. Support can confirm which account the invite landed on and correct it.
If you can see the prime under Companies but no work → open Tasks, click Filters, and use Clear all to drop any filter you left on, then check the view dropdown above the list.
If you need both accounts and are not sure how to start the second one → reply to this article rather than creating a duplicate company record. Duplicates make the prime's vendor list harder to clean up later.
